Govandi, Mumbai: A photo essay on the poor and homeless, who live in inhuman and deplorable conditions.
A man standing next to his makeshift hut, where his house stood just a little over a week ago.
The girl in blue is Jannat. Next to her, is her sister Ashrifa. They have no roof over their heads.
Jannat had the saddest eyes I have ever seen, while Ashrifa managed to crack the widest smile.
A man showing me a picture of his son, who is off at school. He dreams of becoming a doctor.
Ever since their homes were torn down, the people here have to tie their burkhas and dupattas to make the walls of their houses. Menstruating women do not have the privacy to change their sanitary pads, and have to walk 200-300metres to the nearest public toilet.
This mother showed me a picture of her son, who passed away a few years ago. Standing behind her are her daughter and granddaughter; the daughter's husband disappeared while driving interstate taxis 9 years ago.
This man showed me pictures of his neighbours, who were off at work. He thought if justice ever comes knocking, their doors should not be forgotten.
